Engineered climate: The needed governance of Solar Radiation Modification
Saturday 13 november 2021 15:30 - 16:30
Solar Radiation Modification (SRM), a technology still untested but within human reach, consists of increasing the reflection of incoming sunlight back to space to lower the earth's temperature. By doing so, SRM could help reduce major climate hazards, with the greatest benefits going to the most vulnerable regions. Yet SRM involves serious uncertainties, risks, and governance challenges, including the possibility of undermining critical emissions cuts. This panel will explore the needed conditions for a rigorous, legitimate, inclusive, and balanced discussion on the global governance of SRM.
Speakers: Janos Pasztor, Executive Director, Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative (C2G); Andrew Parker, CEO, The Degrees Initiative (Formerly SRMGI); Kim Stanley Robinson, Author; Brice Lalonde, Former Minister of the Ecological Transition, France
