"Science is Politics by Other Means": Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy

Tue May 29, 2018
6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Location: Lillian H. Smith

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars) tells the story of making Mars into a habitable planet. It explores climate change, revolution, and scientific communication in an environment where no one can deny the lack of breathable air or potable water nor the bitter cold temperatures and wind storms.

The trilogy offers lessons to environmentalists and science-fiction enthusiasts both. These novels present the struggle for a future scientific utopia; they show the dystopian proportions of the damage done to scientific pursuits by capitalism and to the climate by capitalist science.

Presented by Brent Ryan Bellamy, University of Alberta.
