The Third Martian Revolution happened over an extended period of time in the first quarted of the 23rd century. Unlike the previous two revolutions, this was a complex, smooth, non-violent revolution that resembled more a shift in values than a revolution.

The causes

  • Strict immigration policy on Mars.
  • Lower living standards on Terra.
  • Paradigm shift brought about by the second renaissance of the Accelerando.

The revolution

The Martian government was created following the Second Martian Revolution which insured Mars's independence from Terra's rule. Its form was established in the Martian constitution created in the Pavonis Mons Congress in 2128.

The global government was a confederation led by a seven-member executive council (inspired by the Swiss system), which was elected by two legislative branches:

The United Nations Transitional Authority (UNTA) was the international political body that dealt with all matters pertaining to human activities on Mars following the First Martian Revolution of 2061, taking over the activities of the UN Office for Martian Affairs. Officially, the UNTA was part of the UN; unofficially, it was a regulating authority entirely controlled by the private interests of the transnationals and later the metanationals. Presidency of UNTA rotated among its members.

A magnifying device constructed in space for the purpose of amplifying the solar radiation received by the surface of Mars, in order to aid in the process of Terraforming. Put into place by the transnationals in the start of the 22nd century.

Quote:

“Well, and now with this soletta pouring sunlight onto the surface!” Jessica exclaimed. She shook her head, as if disapproving. “Natural insolation averaged forty-five percent of Earth’s, and with the soletta it’s supposed to be up to fifty-four.”

“Tell me more about this soletta,” Sax said carefully.

Praxis was a very successful private corporation founded by William Fort on Earth. It was co-managed by Fort's close associates, the so-called Eighteen Immortals. It was a transnational and a metanational. It successfully survived the Great Flood by investing heavily in infrastructure reconstruction.

Subsidiaries

The Martian constitution is the basis of the Martian government.

It was drafted following the Second Martian Revolution which had resulted in the independence of Mars from Terran rule. It was based on elements discussed and agreed upon by the Martian underground in the Dorsa Brevia Conference of 2107. The constitution was written in the Pavonis Mons Congress in 2128 and put to vote to the Martian population on February 27, 2128 (M-52); it was passed with 78%, with 95% of the voting Martian population participating to the vote.

The Browns is a loose name for a Martian ideological movement that appeared during the 22nd century as a synthesis of the initially opposed Green and Red views. Their name and position is less well defined that these two (other suggested names or colors are the burnt umbers, siennas, madder alizarins, Indian reds or khakis).

The United Nations Office for Martian Affairs (UNOMA) was the international political body that dealt with all matters pertaining to human activities on Mars in the majority of the 21st century. UNOMA was answerable to the UNO General Assembly but progressively became a more independent entity as the influence of transnationals in political affairs increased.

The Reds are those who want to keep Mars in its primary state. They are opposed to releasing Terran biological agents on the surface and every terraforming effort in general. Ironically, despite their conservationist ideas, they bear a name traditionally attributed to revolutionaries. Areologist Ann Clayborne is commonly acknowledged to have initiated the Red movement, even though her purely scientific view on the Red cause was not shared by all the Reds. For many Reds, protecting Mars was something that touched them deeply, on a nearly religious level.

The Martian underground was a de facto group and movement of Martians that lived on Mars in hiding from UNTA and metanational forces, from 2061 to 2127. They were made up of various rebellious movements that survived the First Martian Revolution. They were mainly stationed in settlements around the South pole. Many members of the underground progressively rejoined the surface society and were part of the demimonde.
